ESTELLE ROSENFIELD

Estelle is a mixed media and live artist, using puppetry, installation, live art, photography, film and animation. She aims at working in a ‘total’ creation process: from conception to performance. She is especially interested in playing with boundaries between performing and exhibition. Her work is often participative, trying to relate to audiences in unexpected ways and exploring the possibilities of site specific and outdoor work.

She trained as a puppeteer and prop maker and sill works as a freelancer. She’s also been involved in a number of community projects.

A few years ago, Estelle found in her studio in Paris an old photograph of a family on a beach. She wasn’t sure who these people were or how this holiday snap arrived among her belongings, so she asked her father. Her father told her it was his father’s family and that the photo was probably taken around 1930 at Berck-Plage, a then-fashionable seaside resort in northern France. Then, he pointed in turn to three of the six figures in the photo, saying: ‘Deported, deported, deported!’ They died in Auschwitz. Estelle decided to take this photograph as a starting point, and started to re-create and re-animate the deported figures from the picture, making them pose for photographs with other people.
