Dads Project... Me & My Dad
This programme works with fathers to support their understanding of the importance of
outdoor learning and gives them the confidence and skills to use the outdoors as a positive
The outdoor environment is a rich, dynamic and natural space for learning and development
in children of all ages. Its value is an essential learning resource and has been recognised by
many pieces of research and more recently within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS),
particularly within the principle of ‘Enabling Environments’.
The EYFS states:
- Being outdoors has a positive impact on children's sense of well-being and helps all
aspects of children's development.
- Being outdoors offers opportunities for doing things in different ways and on different
scales than when indoors.
- It gives children first-hand contact with weather, seasons and the natural world.
- Outdoor environments offer children freedom to explore, use their senses, and be
physically active and exuberant.
We offer five distinct programmes for fathers - Sensory Developement, Active Play,
Story Telling, Booking Making, one that focuses on creating simple Hand Made Toys, and our Wilderness Programme.
Me & My Dad Project
The sensory developement programme centres around being outdoors. The children and their fathers create expedition packs containing magnifying glasses, compasses and tools for bark rubbing and collecting natural objects. On the expedition we explore touch, smell, tastes, sounds and talk about what we see.
On returning from the expedition the fathers and their children create sensory boxes containing natural objects that stimulate the senses. Fathers take these home to continue their journey of learning with their child.
During the stories programme we go on an expedition with fathers and their children using the outdorrs as a stimulas to encourage their imaginations. After the expedition the fathers and their children create their own stories and make a beautiful illustrated hand made book.
Stories are important because they develope childrens imaginations, increase their vocabulary and help them understand the world. It is particulary important for fathers to read stories to their sons becoming a role model that will support a childs futre learning. A love of reading is one of the most important and lasting gifts a father can give his child.
